Vision
Two decades in the making, Brooklyn Basin reconnects Oakland with its historic waterfront to introduce the thriving new neighborhood—complete with open-air parks, vibrant residential communities, and local shops and eateries. Situated on 65 acres of formerly inaccessible industrial land, the new community hub is an inspiring place to live, play, and shop—framed by the panoramic views from San Francisco to the East Bay hills.

Project Milestone
Parks and Green Spaces
Designed in collaboration with the community, the ‘Necklace of Parks’ at Brooklyn Basin introduces its inaugural offering Township Commons. The first of four parks at Brooklyn Basin, Township Commons is a beautiful new community amenity designed to accommodate small gatherings, performances by local musicians and artists, and other community activities.
Township Commons
The first of five parks to be completed at Brooklyn Basin, Township Commons welcomes Oakland residents to the beautiful waterfront with coastal planting, an expansive deck, and sweeping views. Constructed atop a re-imagined industrial pier along the Oakland Estuary, the park has become a popular destination for community gatherings and recreation.
Future Parks
Totaling more than 30 acres, Brooklyn Basin's necklace of waterfront parks will provide beautiful new public spaces for Oakland residents to enjoy. The parks are being completed in phases, with the next park space expected to open in late 2023.

California Canoe & Kayak
Located in the 9th Avenue Terminal Building steps from Oakland’s beautiful waterfront, California Canoe & Kayak is a premier specialty paddle sports pro shop. Founded in Marin in 1972 by paddlers, the company has remained paddler owned and operated ever since. The shop at Brooklyn Basin is open five days a week for merchandise sales and rentals.
Oaklandish
Located in a glass kiosk at the heart of the 9th Avenue Terminal Building, the Oaklandish Mini Shop spreads local love through Oakland-centric apparel and accessories.
Zocalo Coffee
Zocalo Coffeehouse is an independently owned and operated cafe, located on the ground floor of Orion Apartments at Brooklyn Basin. Zocalo is headed by Sara Ubelhart, whose Louisville, Kentucky upbringing is the driving force behind Zocalo Coffee.
The Lumpia Company
The Lumpia Company was founded in 2015 by food entrepreneur Alex Retodo, channeling his mother’s Filipino cooking but with some flavor twists, such as the best-selling Bacon Cheeseburger Lumpia.

Brooklyn Basin is bringing 465 new affordable homes for families and seniors to the Oakland waterfront. Developed and managed by MidPen Housing, the new affordable communities are the result of an innovative and highly collaborative public/private partnership and began welcoming residents to the neighborhood in 2020.
